This site is about my passion for wine
I am a mature WSET Diploma candidate, thinking about a fourth career, and one of the best ways to learn is to write. Vines and wines are a step change, I like to grow things too, and so have a few vines of my own. I read widely, have an extensive reference library, and taste broadly.
Globalisation, offshoring, tax avoidance, subversive undercutting, supplier abuse, loop holes, zero hour contracts, paying below the minimum wage – we need a revolution against the businesses using these practices, be it in book or wine retailing. So, this site is also my contribution to that revolution.
My initial aims are:
- To encourage trading-up to £10-20 bracket for still and £10-30 for sparkling and fortifieds, thinking about alternatives to the best known wines and producers, sourced from independent merchants and retailers, pushing for bottle fermented cava, sekt, cremant, niche champagne and worldwide sparkling.
- To search out, visit and write-up individual producers with, most crucially, dated tasting notes, according to the WSET SAT. I do not score wines, but if I did, rather than use the top 20 points 0f a 100 point scale, I would prefer an exponential scale, so that perfection can never ever be achieved. I decant all wines, tasting immediately, commenting on development then, and further into the next day if warranted – many is the time that nuances or suspicions on day 1 are realised on day 2. For me, this is one of the joys of wine.
- To disseminate interesting industry news, and to write about current issues.
