Sonnenuhr Riesling Beerenauslese 2006

Selbach-Oster Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling Beerenauslese, Mosel, Germany, 2006

Varietal riesling, natural cork closure, 375ml, 7% abv, BBR about £60

WSET style tasting note
Appearance: clear and bright, of deep intensity gold, and showing tears.

Nose: clean on the nose with a pronounced intensity, developing with aromas of thick warm honey, with notes of botrytis – overripe stone fruit – apricot and white peach, overripe pineapple, quince, butterscotch, and deep aromas of warm hay.

Palate: a sweet wine, with medium acidity, the slightest gummy grip, low alcohol and a full body, with a smooth oily texture from the residual sugar, with a medium (+) intensity, with flavours of botrytis – ripe pineapple, thick warm honey and butterscotch, and overripe stone fruit.  A long finish with a clean ever so slightly gummy finish.

Quality: a very good quality wine, with acidity ever so slightly on the low side to balance the sweetness, nevertheless this does not detract.  A complex concentrated wine with botrytised notes of overripe stone and tropical fruits and deep honeyed notes, with tertiary hay and butterscotch.  This wine will keep, but with acidity on the wane, will cellar and improve for just 2-3 years.

  1. 2006 was so hot, it was hard to retain enough acidity in the grapes. Glad you still enjoyed it.
