Vina Godeval, Godello, DO Valdeorras (Ourense), Galicia, Spain, 2013
At the regional government organised annual Wine Tasting of Galicia event, this wine was chosen as the best wine of the DO, varietal godello, natural cork closure, 13.5% abv, Costco, about £9.20 inc. VAT.
This wine has a Chablis-like profile, but without the striking acidity and with a little less alcohol, a half or full degree less depending on the vintage in France.
WSET style tasting note
Appearance: clear and bright, pale intensity lemon, showing ears.
Nose: clean on the nose, of medium (+) intensity, youthful, with aromas of ripe dessert apple, galia melon, with a light floral honeysuckle note, star anise, a waxy note and another of drying stones (some call this minerality).
Palate: a dry wine, with medium (+) acidity, a slight gummy grip, medium (+) alcohol and a medium body, of medium intensity, with flavours of green golden delicious apple, ripe yellow grapefruit and grapefruit zest and a light honeyed note. A medium (+) length with a clean fresh slightly grippy finish.
Quality: a very good quality wine, with fresh acidity perfectly balancing the alcohol, which are in harmony with the intensity of flavour. A youthful, yet complex wine, with a good level of flavour concentration and length. This wine has the acidity, balance and concentration to keep for 2-3 years, but will not improve.
