Penfolds Bin 2 Shiraz Mourvedre 2012

Penfolds Bin 2, Shiraz Mourvedre, South Australia, 2012

Natural cork closure, 14.5% abv, Majestic Wine £13

WSET style tasting note
Appearance: clear and bright, deep intensity purple, showing tears.

Nose: clean on the nose, pronounced intensity, developing, with rich opening aromas of black and red berry fruit – more specifically spicy black cherry, macerated red cherry, black currant, and a slight herbal nuance, liquorice and vanilla.

Palate: a dry wine, with medium acidity, smooth well-integrated medium tannins, high alcohol and a full body, of medium (+) intensity, a smooth texture, with flavours of spicy black cherry, ripe black berry, blackcurrant boiled sweets, rich liquorice and a low-key oaky note. A long length with a clean low-key tannin finish.

Quality: a good quality wine, with just balanced acidity and alcohol, which is in keeping with the flavour intensity, but the tannins are a little on the light side.  A youthful coloured wine, fruit forward, with evidence of some development with tertiary notes of macerated fruit and liquorice.  A good level of intensity, and a high level of flavour concentration, with a long length. This wine will keep for 3-5 years but will not improve with keeping.
