Hunter Laings Ardbeg 1991

Hunter Laing & Co., Old and Rare Platinum Ardbeg, 22 year old, Islay, Scotland, 1991

This spirit: a blend of age 22-25 years, aged in American oak, bottled in May 2013, 55.8% abv, 3cl, Gauntleys, £30 (12/17)

WSET style tasting note
Appearance: clear and bright, pale intensity gold.

Nose: clean, medium intensity, with aromas as they come, of peat, damp wood smoke, warm damp hay, tincture of iodine, wet sawdust, whiff of malted bread, hint of dried orchard fruit – apple and pear; matured. The addition of water makes no difference to the appearance.

Palate: dry, warming alcohol, full body, a velvety almost oily texture with a very low-key grip, medium intensity, with flavours of medicinal notes, damp wood smoke, tincture of iodine, a hint of nuttiness. A long length, very complex.

Quality: outstanding, the warming alcohol once well diluted (with ~50% water) becomes velvety smooth, integrated and harmonious; very complex, with a profile typical of a strongly peated Islay whisky, following into a very long length and a smooth oily finish.
