This wine: lot No. L-170905H, a crianza based on varietal tempranillo, with 18 months fermentation in oak vat, and at least a year in bottle, before release; coated natural cork closure, 13.5% abv, M&S, offer, £29.33 (09/18)

Consumer tasting note: deeply ruby hued, with strong aromas of ripe black berries and fruits, black olive, button mushroom, coffee grounds and black liquorice; medium-full bodied, with flavours of rich black berries, lightly savoury, cut button mushroom and black liquorice. Finishes firmly long. Drink now – RTD, but will keep – Wait. Decant for at least an hour.

WSET style tasting note
Appearance: clear and bright, deep intensity ruby, showing tears [a tiny quantity of fine sediment].

Nose: clean, pronounced intensity, fully developed, with aromas as they come, of black plum jam, spicy, black olive, black berry, slightly high-toned black cherry, black currant jam, a whiff of funk (bretty), touch of cedar, cut button mushroom, beeswax, a whiff of ground coffee, black liquorice.

Palate: dry, medium (+) acidity, ripe medium (+) tannins, medium (+) alcohol, medium (+) body, medium (+) intensity, a velvety texture, with flavours of stewed black cherry, black currant boiled sweets, black berry, lightly savoury, cut button mushroom, leaf humus, black liquorice. A long length, with a clean, black fruited finish.

Quality: outstanding, perfectly balanced fresh acidity and ripe tannins with alcohol; strong intensity throughout with a similar concentration of black fruits, showing a high level of complexity, with evidence of time in well-integrated wood (cedar, coffee, spice) and extended time in bottle (beeswax, cedar, leaf humus, mushroom, savoury); finishes firmly long.

Drinking readiness/ageing potential: drink now, unsuited to further ageing, but will keep for 2-3 years – a sound structure and balance, with a strong character, firmly long, showing a very pleasing balance of rich primary fruit, well-integrated oak and an interesting tertiary dimension of mushroom.
